Application Opening and Closing Dates for 2025
The University of Kwazulu-Natal online application for 2025 has officially opened on 1 March 2024 and will close on 30 September 2024. Late applications are strongly discouraged because it happened to past learners who applied late were left without admission slots and remained at home even after the academic year had begun.

Below are the required documents to submit for the 2025 UKZN online application:
For South African Applicants
- Certified copy of your Identification Documents (ID)
- Certified copy of your Grade 12 exam results or
- Certified copy of your Grade 11 (if you’re currently doing Grade 12)
- Email address and Phone Number.
For International Applicants
- Certified copy of your Identification Document (ID) of your home country.
- Certified copy of your home country’s Passport Number.
- Study Visa in South Africa.
- English Proficiency.
- Medical Aid.
- Proof of IELTS at an overall score of 6 and TOEFL at an average score of 80–104 for Undergraduate programmes.
- Copy of University of KwaZulu-Natal English Language Programme Test (if necessary).
UKZN Required Documents for Returning Students
For returning undergraduate students, students with a gap year, all local postgraduate applications and both undergraduate and postgraduate international applicants. Please remember to upload the following documents (where applicable)
- Certified copy of your ID/passport.
- Certified copy of your National Senior/Matric Certificate or O/A Levels or relevant school leaving qualification/certificate.
- Proof from Universities South Africa (previously known as HESA), that you qualify for admission to degree studies at South African universities, if you are an international applicant. For more information, refer to the undergraduate prospectus
- Certified copies of your degree certificate(s), academic record and certificate of conduct, if you attended other universities.
- Proof of English proficiency for International applicants from non-English speaking countries.
- South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA) evaluations if the previous qualification(s) was/were obtained at foreign universities (outside South Africa).
- A research proposal/proposed title of the dissertation/thesis if you are applying for a Master’s Degree or PhD.
- A valid study visa to study in SA if you are an International applicant.
How to Apply to UKZN for 2025
The University of KwaZulu-Natal uses the central application office (CAO) for their applications now, so follow these procedures to ensure you apply correctly:
STEP 1:
Consult the CAO handbook that provides listings of qualifications available at the different institutions.
STEP 2:
Have a look through the various courses offered and choose a programme that interests you and for which you may qualify. Pay attention to closing dates for qualifications.
STEP 3:
Find the programme code that is linked to the qualification that you have chosen. This code needs to be entered on the application form.
STEP 4:
Use this programme code when completing the CAO form, which is available from the CAO, the CAO website, the University’s Application and Information Office at Howard College, or the Student Academic Administration Offices at Edgewood, Howard College, Pietermaritzburg and Westville campuses.
Apply online, by completing the online application form on the website: www.cao.ac.za. Once you get to the website follow these guidelines:
- Click on ‘Apply’
- Read the information and click on the ‘continue with application’
- Enter your ID number or your CAO number. then submit
- Enter All the information requested. Once you have entered all the information requested, click ‘Next’
- A pop-up will appear with your CAO Number, Password and EasyPay Number.
- fill out the online CAO application form and provide certified copies of your identity card and Grade 12 diploma
- Upload all the documents requested (keep reading to know the required documents) and click ‘process my application’
- Submit your application
