Yale Young African Scholars (YYAS) is an intensive academic and enrichment programme designed for African secondary school students planning on attending university and who wish to make a meaningful impact as young leaders in their various societies.

About Yale Young African Scholars Programme
Yale Young African Scholars (YYAS) is a proud member of the HALI Access Network and continues to enjoy support from The Whitney and Betty MacMillan Center for International and Area Studies at Yale. YYAS was modeled off its sister program, Yale Young Global Scholars (YYGS), and continues to operate under its umbrella.
A typical YYAS participant has:
- Excellent academic records
- Demonstrated leadership potential
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- A desire and ability to work cooperatively with peers
- Persistence and determination when facing challenges
- High standards of personal and professional conduct
- The ability to read, analyze, and reflect on large quantities of difficult material in English
- Demonstrated maturity and interest in engaging in discussions about intellectual, moral, and political issues in Africa
Eligibility Requirements
For you to be considered eligible for the Yale Young African Scholars programme, you must fulfill the following requirements:
- You must be between 14-18 years old on 18 July 2024
- You must be an African (or a refugee living in an African country)
- You must currently attend secondary school in an African country.
- You must be a current 10th or 11th grade student (or the international equivalents).
- You must be able to participate in a rigorous academic curriculum conducted in English.
- If you attend school in the Northern Hemisphere, you must be graduating secondary school by earliest May/June 2025 and no later than May/June 2026. If you attend school in the Southern Hemisphere, you must be graduating secondary school by earliest November/December 2024 and no later than November/December 2025.
NOTE: If you are in your final year of secondary school, or you are a YYAS/YYGS alumnus, you are not eligible to apply for this programme.
How to Apply for YYAS programme
Once you have decided you are going to apply for the Yale Young African Scholars programme, and you meet all the requirements, click here to begin your application. Your application consists of three things:
- Completed application form
- Official transcript or grade report(s) for each year in secondary school
- One (1) teacher recommendation
the application form should alo contain one 500-word essay and two short essay responses, and must provide information on their extracurricular activities and the school that you currently attend. Applicants will be notified electronically of admissions decisions by mid-April, 2024.
Deadline
The deadline for the Yale young African Scholars programme is 10th November 2023 and the Regular Decision deadline for YYAS is 25 January 2024. All required components must be submitted by 25 January 2024 at 11:59pm EST.
